It is generally agreed that current standards of beauty explain the high levels of body dissatisfaction and the exacerbated increase in eating disorders. As a result, it is very common to come across restrictive diets that promise miracles in a few days. And therein lies a huge danger! Restrictive diets are major causes of serious eating disorders.
But what are eating disorders? They are psychiatric diseases characterized by severe changes in eating behavior, which affect metabolism, hunger and satiety patterns and the meaning of food, which can result in serious clinical and nutritional changes .
When calories are reduced from one moment to the next, and food groups are restricted, or even when there are several hours of fasting, without prior preparation for this, a series of negative psychological effects can result, such as disturbances in affection and self-esteem, cognition and eating behavior.
Obesity represents a serious public health problem not only in our country, but worldwide. Its severity is due to the reduction in the quality of life of obese individuals, as well as the association with comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular, respiratory diseases and even some types of cancer.
In 2019, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Research (IBGE) reported that 61.7% of the Brazilian population, over 20 years old, was overweight, with 26.8% being obese (IBGE / 2019).
There is no other way to start the treatment of obesity, if not, with the change in lifestyle. And for that we count on dietary reeducation and the practice of physical exercises. The use of medications is indicated only when there are failures in this change or for patients with overweight associated with comorbidities. When this clinical treatment fails, for a period longer than two years, there is the option of surgical treatment, which is reserved for patients with grades 2 and 3 obesity and comorbidities.
Most obese patients who seek treatment have some type of disorder, such as depression, anxiety or even eating disorders caused by poorly directed dietary restrictions. Because, even if dietary restriction is an important ally in weight loss, when it is applied in a disorderly manner , there are serious risks that it causes an eating disorder, such as BED .
We need to be aware that the best option will always be the consumption of a balanced diet, with regular schedules and the consumption of food of all kinds, in a varied and pleasurable way, added to the practice of physical activity according to the aptitude of each one. , without being an obligation.
Helping to find body satisfaction is a matter of primary necessity, emphasizing for teenagers that there are different types of bodies, which makes it impossible to standardize weights and sizes or body measurements. It is also necessary to educate adolescents about the media, about the harm and inefficiency of restrictive diets present in magazines and on the internet and about the use of photographic and image resources, which create unreal bodies.
